Legendary PhD Hoops Coach, Bob Hutchings Passes Away
January 10, 2023 – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Coach Bob Hutchings today. Coach Hutch has been one of the most recognizable PhD Hoops faces, a mentor & friend to many, an amazing man and one of the best coaches the game has ever seen.
Over the course of 72 years, Coach Hutch has touched tens of thousands of lives. His energy, enthusiasm and passion for coaching the game of basketball has allowed him to positively affect people across the world. For 50 years, he has been coaching players at the high school, college and international levels. For the last several years, he served as Assistant Coach at Stockton University (NJ), where he has been a part of multiple conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Throughout the course of his career, Coach Hutchings has served as Assistant Coach for Mike Krzyzewski (Army), was an Assistant Coach for the Saudi Arabian National Team, been the Head Coach of Cumberland County College and Head Coach at Bridgeton High School (NJ).Â
For all of Coach Hutch’s outstanding accomplishments, he has been inducted into The New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Millville Thunderbolts Hall of Fame, the Wheeling Jesuit Athletic Hall of Fame and the All Sports Museum of Southern New Jersey Hall of Fame. He is an Associate Emeritus Member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, a certified FIBA-licensed and USA Basketball Gold-licensed coach and has been inducted into the Hoop Historians. Coach Hutchings earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Wheeling Jesuit University and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling Education from C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
Coach Hutch has been a blessing in the life of everyone who knew him. We are especially thankful for helping PhD Hoops become what it is today. He will be incredibly missed and loved by us forever.Â
